D. Fairchild Ruggles

Professor, Landscape Architecture

D. Fairchild Ruggles is the author of the award-winning "Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain" (2000) and "Islamic Gardens and Landscapes" (2008). She has edited or co-edited six other books and journals and written more than fifty articles and reports on a variety of topics ranging from landscape history to Islamic art, cultural heritage, and gender history. She is a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, and co-directs the program in cultural heritage studies. In Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, her primary areas of study are Islamic Spain and South Asia. Dr. Ruggles has contributed to design projects as consultant to the Heritage Trust of Baroda (India) with a joint team of University of Illinois and Indian landscape architects working on a preservation and design plan for the recently designated UNESCO World Heritage site Champaner. She was recently interviewed for the documentary “Cities of Light” (2007), and for the series “Perspectives on Faith” (2008).
